Community / MSP detects lack of urgency in fixing mobile fault
SHETLAND MSP Beatrice Wishart says there is a lack of urgency to fix a technical issue leaving many people in the north of Shetland without mobile signal for six consecutive days.
According to Vodafone engineers are due to attend the site on Monday 28 July, ten days after the site serving the area stopped working.
Requests for updates on the current situation to Vodafone and O2 remained unanswered today (Thursday).
The outage is affecting hundreds of people in the North Mainland as well as the North Isles, and appears to have spread further over recent days.
The loss of the mobile signal is causing great inconvenience for people, leaving them cut off from vital communication and access to services.
Meanwhile local residents have also been complaining about poor quality mobile signals in other parts of Shetland, including Lerwick.
Wishart said: “I don’t detect any sense of urgency in resolving this outage or any understanding of the impact this is having and continue to pursue the matter with Vodafone.”
In a response to her, Vodafone confirmed that the site is hosted by Virgin Media/O2 and that engineers had previously attended but were unable to fix the fault.
The engineers require parts which have been delayed and won’t be available on the mainland Thursday (today), Vodafone told the MSP.
An engineer is due to attend the site on Monday, Vodafone said, adding that it will try to bring that forward.
