YOUNG folk in Sandness are celebrating the installation of a new nest swing in the school playground.
A desire for a better range of playground equipment was highlighted by the pupils at Sandness Primary school as part of a ‘Place in Childhood’ project consultation.
The swing was installed in May this year after Sandness Parent Council was successful in their fundraising to cover the £3,500 cost.
Grants of £1,000 from the Shetland Community Benefit Fund and Tesco Stronger Starts, along with donations of £500 from Jamieson’s of Shetland and Scottish Sea Farms, made up the bulk of the funding.
Parent-run pizza nights and other events brought in funds to make up the remainder.
Angie Nichols from the parent council said: “It’s been hard work getting the funds together for the swing, but it’s great to be able to contribute to the school and the community.
“We’re very grateful to all our funders and the folk who helped with everything.”
It is said the nest swing has already been well used by local children of all ages and is also beneficial for young people with additional support needs.
Ailsa MacBeath, a Sandness school pupil, said the swing is “brilliant, I go on it every day with my friends”.
A COUNCILLOR is set to walk the perimeter of her ward – raising money for local schools in the process.
Moraig Lyall believes it will take around three days to cover the perimeter of her Shetland Central ward.
She said money donated will be given to parent councils in the ward.
