News / VodafoneThree exploring subsea cable to improve network connectivity
A SUBSEA cable which could “transform connectivity” in Shetland is set to be explored by the newly merged VodafoneThree.
The mobile network giant has announced it will carry out a feasibility study into a cable which would run from Shetland to mainland Scotland.
Work has already started on the study, which is expected to be completed in spring 2026.
The company said it would provide “essential infrastructure for high-speed internet and telecommunications services for local communities, as well as businesses”.
The move would also “bring much-needed digital resilience to the islands”, as well as supporting “expected future demand in connectivity services”.
VodafoneThree has said it will also explore how to improve Lerwick’s 4G connectivity while the study is ongoing.
The company said it met with Shetland Islands Council (SIC) in November last year about the plans, and added the Scottish Government had welcomed news of the study.
MSP Richard Lochhead, the Scottish minister for business, said it was essential that people in rural areas and islands like Shetland were “not left behind in the digital age”.
“Private investment is critical to delivering this mission and I welcome VodafoneThree’s renewed commitment to help deliver the infrastructure needed to support our island communities, including its intention to undertake a feasibility study into a subsea connection between Shetland and the mainland,” he added.
Vodafone business director Nick Gliddon said the company’s meeting with the SIC last year had shown how essential a connectivity upgrade would be for Shetland.
“The proposed cable could transform the connectivity landscape for the islands further, bringing significant economic and social benefits,” he said.
“We remain committed to delivering the necessary infrastructure to ensure the continued prosperity and growth of the islands.”
