MORE than 200 people attended a free heart screening event in Lerwick at the weekend, with over ten folk referred for further checks.
The screening took place at the weekend at the Clickimin for people aged between 14 and 35, with screenings carried out by the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young, whose team of eight travelled to Shetland from the mainland.
This event’s screening was made even more special by the screening of Robbie Anderson who turned up on his 14th birthday on Sunday, making him the youngest person ever screened by Cardiac Risk in the Young in the UK.
The event was coordinated locally by Shetland Heart Screening, whose committee features Siobhan Pirie, Fern Johnson and Andrea Laurenson.
The group formed a few years ago when Pirie’s husband John unexpectedly passed away in 2017 at the age of just 29 after suffering a cardiac arrest.
The group said they felt “incredibly grateful and overwhelmed” by the support received to date, through fundraising and sponsorship – given that each event costs around £14,000.
LERWICK Port Authority has issued a notice to mariners to remind vessels of their obligation to report any infectious diseases when arriving in Lerwick Harbour.
It comes after a cruise ship arrived in Lerwick last month despite some people on board having reported gastrointestinal illness during their trip – with some tour companies deciding against taking passengers.
The notice, issued on 30 May, contains contact details for NHS Shetland’s public health team as well as the SIC’s environmental health department and Lerwick Port Authority.

THE SHETLAND Inter Faith group is hosting an event entitled Faith, Food & Friendship in Lerwick next week.
The event, at Islesburgh in Lerwick on Wednesday 18 June at 7.30pm. will “offer folk another opportunity to share and discover more about the variety of faiths and beliefs held by people in Shetland”.
The group said all are welcome to attend.
Organisers said the event will be very informal in nature, with people invited to bring along something – such as a piece of music, an object, a poem, or whatever they wish – which relates to their life and faith.
THERE was a good turnout at the Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary on Sunday for the Selkiewife Summer Spree, which was held in celebration of late founder Jan Bevington.
There was plenty of live music on offer as well as a chance to see the sanctuary’s facilities.
