Sport / Bowlers battle it out for new handcrafted distillery trophy

A BRAND new trophy was played for at the Lerwick Outdoor Bowling Club on Saturday to mark the club’s centenary year.

The Lerwick Distillery trophy has been sponsored by the Market Street whisky distillery, and the prize was a much-coveted handmade wooden design in the shape of a whisky barrel by Paparwark Furniture.

On the day 42 members were drawn into teams of triples and then played three six-end matches on different rinks, scoring two points for a win and one point for a draw.

After these games the top four teams went into the semi-finals, which were played over four ends.

The first semi-final was between the team of Rosie Jamieson, Rhona Wiseman and skip Gibbie Pottinger, who lost 5-2 against Ian Scott, Elma Scott and skip Andy Walterson.

The other semi saw Sandy Henry, Sandy Stewart and skip Colin Gillespie defeat Michael Ballard, Margaret Robertson and skip Donald Campbell by 4-1.

The final, again played over four ends, was a very close game with every end only being decided by a one shot margin.

It was Andy Walterson’s team who won three of the four ends and collected the trophy and main cash prize, generously donated by the distillery, for the first time.

Lerwick Outdoor Bowling Club gave many thanks to the sponsors, to the members who helped with the catering and, despite the inclement weather, made the day a great success.
