Transport / Island flights to remain at Sumburgh for another week
INTER-island flights will operate to and from Sumburgh Airport for a week longer than expected.
This is to allow for a weather window for putting markings on the resurfaced Tingwall Airport runway.
Work began earlier this month on resurfacing the Tingwall runway, with Foula and Fair Isle flights moving to Sumburgh Airport.
It had previously been said that flights would return to Tingwall on 2 June but this has now been extended to Monday 9 June.
In an update released on Tuesday, Shetland Islands Council – which owns the the airport – said the resurfacing of the 805-metre runway has now been substantially completed.
“It will however take a little longer to complete the runway lining, which requires a window of dry weather for markings on the new asphalt surface, before the airport can reopen to flights,” a spokesperson said.
“A decision has been taken to extend the work period for another week, so this work can be completed.
“Flights to Foula and Fair Isle will continue to operate from Sumburgh during this time.”
