PLANS for a new family home at Lerwick’s Waarie Geo have been approved after the scale of the project was reduced.
The two-storey house will replace a dilapidated shed near to the Knab.
A number of residents from Lerwick’s Breiwick Road and the surrounding areas had opposed the plans earlier this year, with some citing concerns about its proximity to the sea and the potential to block their views.
However the overall scale of the home was reduced and its “footprint made more compact” in an effort to ease the concerns.
The plans for land at the Waarie Geo would see the shed there – previously used as a changing room for young people who learned to swim in the sea there in decades gone by – demolished.
The site was sold by Shetland Islands Council to local company Renewable Kinetics Ltd in 2023 for £48,000.
The plans focus on a “low-slung eco-house to harmonise and visually integrate with the natural environment of this unique and beautiful site”.
Shetland Islands Council planners approved the plans last week.
FORMER children’s services director Helen Budge has been appointed deputy lieutenant for Shetland.
Budge joins Lerwick Port Authority chief executive Calum Grains, Voluntary Action Shetland executive officer Lynn Tulloch and Pure Energy Centre business development manager Elizabeth Johnson as the deputy lieutenants for the isles.
She was appointed to the role on 20 May.
The deputy lieutenants and vice lieutenant Iain Tulloch support the work of lord lieutenant Lindsay Tulloch.

THERE was a rare visitor to Sumburgh Airport on Friday morning in the shape of a Germany-based air ambulance plane.
It flew to Shetland direct from Germany before heading to Ireland.
The air ambulance is operated by Aero-Dienst on behalf of ADAC, and the service is used to take people back to their home country after falling unwell or suffering a serious accident abroad.
A spokesperson for Aero-Dienst said from “time to time, our missions take us to more remote or less frequently visited locations like Shetland”.
“So this flight was a special one for us as well – a welcome change of scenery,” they said.
UHI Shetland and RSPB Shetland are teaming up to host a conference and evening event celebrating and exploring the protection, management and restoration of Shetland’s marine ecosystems.
Held at UHI Shetland’s Scalloway campus lecture theatre on Tuesday 10 June, the event will bring together industry, organisations and researchers to share knowledge and discuss the sustainable management of local seas.
The afternoon conference will be followed by a public evening talk diving into Shetland’s underwater world and the stewardship shaping its past, present and future.
People can sign up to the daytime conference here and the evening talk here.
NEARLY 170 people have signed a petition urging the Post Office to keep a service in Burravoe in the south of Yell.
Shetland News previously reported how the Post Office was not looking to replace the Burravoe service when the current postmistress retires this summer.
This drew concern from many – particularly over the lack of consultation.
But three days later the Post Office confirmed it would explore keeping a postal service going in the community, with the Brough Stores expressing an interest.
