CELTIC recovered from their opening day league disappointment to move into the last four of the Jewson Madrid Cup on Monday night.

The Celts, who are the competition’s holders, thrashed Whalsay 5-0 in town, with a double from Johnny Murray and goals from James Aitken, Jack Simpson and Jake Ramsay easing them through.

They will meet town rivals Spurs – who beat them on the opening night of premier league action – in Monday night’s semi-final clashes.

Whitedale and Ness will meet in the other semi-final after both teams racked up three goals at the start of the week to progress.

Thistle ran Whitedale close in their quarter-final tie, with the team from the Westside edging them out 3-2.

Goals from Greg Tulloch, Allan Johnston and Piotr Drozdowski saw off the Jags, who had responded through Cameron Uren and Calvin Leask.

It was plain sailing for Ness in Hamnavoe on Monday, with Stuart Copland, Joe Casey and Callum Morrison on the scoresheet as they beat Scalloway 3-0.

They will host Whitedale at Cunningsburgh on Monday for a place in the Madrid Cup final, which takes place on Saturday 28 June.

There is just one Ocean Kinetics Premier League fixture taking place tonight (Friday), with Spurs welcoming Ness to the Gilbertson Park for a 6.30pm kick-off.

DITT RESERVE LEAGUE

Whalsay B have surged to the summit of the reserve league after convincingly beating Spurs B 4-1 in the Bonnie Isle on Wednesday.

The two teams were the only sides left with 100 per cent records heading into the fixture, but goals from Ian and Neil Johnson, Richard Whelan and Travis Duncan ensured it was Whalsay who secured the three points.

Keegan Page scored the Spurs’ response.

Whitedale B recovered from the disappointment of losing their two season unbeaten streak the week before to comfortably beat Scalloway B 3-0, with Rhys Hinton, Ryan Gerrard and Soren Anderson scoring.

Celtic B backed up their win over Whitedale B by dismantling Ness B 6-3, thanks in part to a hat-trick from Sam Constable.

Jordan Simpson, Jordan Thomason and Jake Ramsay also netted for the Celts, with Evan Grogan, Harry Morton and veteran forward Thomas Sinclair replying for the South Mainland side.

In the other midweek fixture, a hat-trick from Iain Devonald and a goal from the experienced Leighton Flaws helped Delting B to see off Thistle B 4-2.

Kieran Odie and Brooklyn Chattell were on the scoresheet for the Jags.

JEWSON CHAMPIONSHIP

All three championship fixtures take place tomorrow (Saturday), with early leaders Bressay Sharks making the long journey to Unst to take on North Isles.

The league’s top two will meet at Baltasound for a 2pm kick-off, before Banks host newly formed Southside Impact at Seafield in Lerwick at 6pm.

Ness C will welcome Wastside Rebels to Sandwick for a 6.30pm kick-off in the final match of the day.
