SHETLAND Islands Council convener Andrea Manson has praised the local community for the positive reception given to the Liberation Convoy that arrived from Bergen last week.

She said there is a “deep warmth in our relationship” with Norway which has endured for many years.

“It’s been a joy to see so many Norwegian flags on our streets and in our harbours to greet the visitors,” the councillor added.

“I’d like to thank everyone in Shetland who has welcomed the Liberation Convoy and for the many connections that have been made.

“On the 80th Anniversary of VE Day last week, we also remembered those who gave their lives in World War Two and celebrated the peace we have enjoyed since 1945.

“We were joined by members of the Royal Norwegian Navy and Tore Hattrem, the Norwegian ambassador to the UK, who also spoke of the fragility of peace and the need to protect democracy.

At a civic reception at Lerwick Town Hall last Wednesday evening, Manson also presented Hattrem with a framed painting of Norwegian naval ship and Shetland Bus vessel KNM Hitra by Scalloway-based artist Sam Davies.

ORKNEY and Shetland MP Alistair Carmichael has warned that the Labour government is “falling into the same trap that the Tories did” in its rhetoric on immigration.

It comes after a new white paper was released on immigration on Monday.

Criticising the use of what he called “hostile rhetoric”, the Lib Dem said: “We need a flexible, dynamic legal migration system that works for our country and our economy, while treating everyone with dignity and respect.”

A ‘FUTURE Housing’ event planned for Monday night (12 May) was postponed – with “limited feedback and interaction from the construction industry” cited as one reason.

A spokesperson for co-organiser Shetland Island Council (SIC) said on Monday: “Without any pressing items being put forward for discussion, and knowing that this is a busy time of year for the construction industry, a decision was taken to postpone today’s Future Housing meeting until later in the year.”
