Council / Van given go-ahead for Yell despite ‘concerns’ from ferries department

DRIVERS waiting for a ferry from Yell to the Shetland mainland will soon be able to grab a bite to eat as they while away the time.

Mobile catering van Yell Eats has been given the green light to sell drinks and snacks from Ulsta ferry terminal – despite some reservations from the council’s ferry department.

Marine operations chief Andrew Inkster said during the planning process that the ferries department had “expressed concerns” about the impact the van would have on the safe marshalling of vehicles in Yell.

Inkster said they were willing to allow the van to go ahead “on a trial basis”.

However, he said that if “any such issues arise” the council reserved the right to withdraw planning permission for the Yell Eats van.

Council planners gave Yell Eats the thumbs up to operate from the Ulsta ferry terminal and to cater to ferry passengers.

The van will operate from the site from 8am to 4pm from Monday to Saturday, the application states.

It will be left on the site on most trading days and will operate from the northern end of the terminal’s parking area.

The Yell Eats van has been operating from the car park of The Hillshop in Mid Yell, offering burgers, hot dogs and fish suppers.
