Community / Community raises almost £230,000 for Cancer Research UK

MORE THAN £227,000 in aid of Cancer Research UK has been raised by this year Relay for Life fundraising effort it was announced on Saturday.

The astonishing sum was revealed during an event at Hay’s Dock to thank all participating relayers, sponsors and friends.

It brings the total raised by the community since the first Relay of Life event was held in the isles in 2006 to £1.8 million.

Chair of the local Relay for Life committee Kerry Llewellyn said raising that amount of money was an “incredible achievement”.

“I am so grateful for the support we get from local businesses and the work my colleagues on committee do year-round to make the various fundraising events happen,” she said.

“Most of all I am so grateful for the relayers participation on what ended up being a very cold evening in May.

“Cancer continues to impact us all and every pound raised helps Cancer Research UK to save lives through research, influence and information.”

Saturday’s event saw the awarding of various relay trophies that recognise everyone’s achievements.

Wild Weemin – A New Hope received the Alan Slater trophy for the team that raises the most money with an amazing £30,145.10.

The Hughson trophy for the individual that raised the most money went to eleven-year-old survivor Etta Hannah who raised over £5,000 after dedicating her time to the relay.

The John Gear trophy, celebrating the Spirit of the Relay, chosen from nominations by relay participant’s, went to Anita Georgeson, for motivating the Wild Weemin to their amazing team total.

The next relay is being planned for Saturday 29 May 2026.
