Coronavirus / Be aware of Omicron test scam emails, council warns
SCAM emails purporting to be from the NHS asking people to order a PCR test for Omicron variant of Covid have been reported in Shetland, according to the council.
The NHS said it never asks for bank details, “so please be aware of suspicious emails or text messages”.
Shetland Islands Council reminded people to look carefully at any email addresses, text messages or internet links and check they are genuine before responding.
It comes after the new Omicron variant of Covid was confirmed in Scotland this week.
The World Health Organisation said the variant was of “concern” as evidence suggested an increased risk of reinfection.
First minister Nicola Sturgeon said on Tuesday that all nine cases of the Omicron variant in Scotland were linked to a single event on 20 November.
The cases were recorded in the Lanarkshire and Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board areas.
Meanwhile seven new cases of Covid were reported in Shetland on Tuesday.
Latest figures show that more than three quarters of people over 50 in Shetland have now had a Covid booster vaccine.
Around 75 per cent of 12 to 15 year olds have also had a first dose.
