News / Youth mental health projects secure Lottery funding
TWO Shetland projects focusing on mental health have received money as part of a special Year of Young People round of funding from the National Lottery.
Scalloway Youth Centre has been awarded £8,800 to run an 18-month project to encourage youngsters to learn about and improve their mental health.
Voluntary Action Shetland has also been given £7,700 to form a youth steering group, which will plan and deliver ten community events for young people.
The events will focus on learning about mental health and training 15 young people as peer mentors.
Scalloway Youth Centre’s funding will support two qualified youth workers to run a project called Chillax, which will allow young people to research topics and prepare materials to run peer-led workshops.
Project coordinator Sharon Jack said: “Young people also suffer from stress and anxiety.
“The idea behind the project is to better equip these young people with the tools necessary to help them live healthier, happier lives.”
A total of £474,900 was distributed to 55 youth projects across Scotland on Thursday in celebration of Scotland’s Year of Young People.
