News / Climbers clear Calder’s Geo of bruck
TWO TONNES of litter was collected from the bottom of Calder’s Geo in Eshaness after a group of local climbers took to the ropes on Sunday to clear the beauty spot of bruck.
Ten members of Climb Shetland dragged the rubbish up to the cliff top, attracting interest and occasional help from the numerous passing tourists.
The haul was much less than the club’s previous Calder’s Geo redd up in 2012, which lifted seven tonnes of bruck.
This year’s collection included several gas cylinders, polystyrene blocks, an oil drum and a buoy that had crossed the Atlantic from Bucks Harbour, Maine.
Not all the rubbish had arrived by sea though, and the group said it was disappointing to still be finding junk deliberately thrown over the banks.
