News / Police remind drivers again about pedestrians in Lerwick

POLICE have reminded drivers once again to keep aware of the number of pedestrians in Lerwick during the summer months.

Officers first issued the reminder in May and while no incidents have been reported since then, they are keen to maintain the message.

Cruise ships have been calling into Lerwick in recent days and weeks, leading to an increased number of tourists walking around town.

Police has given a number of pieces of advice for drivers, such as using mirrors when manoeuvring, only driving on Commercial Street if absolutely necessary and not to “attempt to hurry or harass” pedestrians by revving your engine.

Chief inspector Lindsay Tulloch said: “It is great to see so many people choosing to visit Shetland this summer.

“All we are asking is that people are aware of the increased number of pedestrians, particularly in Lerwick, and drive with that in mind.

“Please drive slowly and carefully in areas where there is likely to be pedestrians and give due consideration to others using the roads.

“That way visitors to the islands should be able to experience the best of Shetland, while locals can go about their business safely.”

The police advice is as follows:

  • Use all mirrors if manoeuvring off or reversing. Look round and check blind spots.
  • Keep crossings clear at all time if in queuing traffic – you must stop when a pedestrian moves onto a crossing. Give pedestrians plenty of time to cross and do not attempt to hurry or harass a pedestrian by revving your engine.
  • Only drive onto Commercial Street if absolutely necessary. Restrictions apply and motorists continue to be issued with fixed penalty tickets.
  • From Church Road to the Market Cross there is no through way with entry restricted to access only
  • From Market Cross to Fort Charlotte, access is completely prohibited between 1130 hrs – 1730 hrs from Monday to Saturday
  • Blue badge holders are exempt from these restrictions.
  • Please take care and give due consideration to others using the road.
