News / Recycling scheme sessions

A NUMBER of information sessions will be held across Shetland over the next couple of months to explain more about how the isles’ new recycling scheme will work.

Drop-in events will take place from Unst to Dunrossness in April and May ahead of Shetland Islands Council implementing the new scheme in July, with staff on hand to answer any questions.

The project, which will see residents be given two new wheelie bins for recyclable rubbish, has already kicked off in Brae and Muckle Roe as a pilot and the feedback has so far largely been positive.

The first event will be held at the Ollaberry Hall on 30 April, with the final session taking place at the Staney Hill Hall in Lerwick on 31 May.

The new scheme was approved by councillors last year in a bid to improve Shetland’s poor recycling rate of just nine per cent as the Scottish Government imposes more stringent targets.

Residents will receive a bin with a blue lid for paper, card and cardboard, and one with a grey lid for cans, cartons and plastic bottles. Non-recyclable waste will be collected every two weeks, while one recycling bin will be collected a fortnight.
