News / Art project to mark 100 years since women got the vote

Leading British suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst provides some of the inspiration for the project.

LOCALS are being invited to take part in a series of workshops over the next few weeks to create a banner which will be taken to a procession in Edinburgh honouring the 100th anniversary of women getting the vote.

Women – those who identify as women or non-binary – are invited to attend weekly sessions at Mareel in Lerwick before a group from the isles takes part in a procession in the Scottish capital on 10 June.

Walks are also taking place in Belfast, Cardiff and London as the UK comes together to honour the centenary of women receiving the vote.

The project – which is called Processions – is being led in Shetland by artist Christina Inkster, who is one of 100 people co-ordinating communities across the country.

She will work via Shetland Arts with local women and women’s groups to create a banner which “represents the lives, ideas, hopes and concerns of women today”.

The national project is commissioned by 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary, and it is produced by Artichoke.

“In 2016 14-18 NOW commissioned the ground-breaking male performance piece We’re Here Because We’re Here that Shetland participated in,” Inkster said.

“14-18 NOW bring the women* within our community (*those who identify as women or non-binary) the chance to take part in their very own illustrious project.

“We have a unique array of women* within this community; within our isles; and I look forward to collaborating with them, celebrating who we are, and creating an artwork for our identity as the women* of Shetland to be voiced through.

“Our banner will be showcased in mass procession in Edinburgh alongside the other women and their banners from the communities throughout Scotland. What an incredible project to be part of.”

The first workshop took place on Monday, but there will be a series of sessions at Mareel in Lerwick in April and May:

  • Monday 2 April: 12pm – 2pm
  • Sunday 8 April: 1pm – 3pm
  • Sunday 15 April: 1pm – 3pm
  • Saturday 21 April: 1pm – 3pm
  • Wednesday 9 May: 7pm – 9pm
