News / Over a thousand raised for Marie Curie at supermarket
OVER £1,000 was raised for terminal illness care and support charity Marie Curie on Saturday thanks to a collection held by local volunteers at the Tesco supermarket in Lerwick.
A new Shetland fundraising group for Marie Curie has also been established, with a cupcake sale at the Brae Hotel raising another £240.
The Tesco collection took place between 10am and 6pm, with £1,066.53 in total being raised.
Marie Curie community fundraiser for the Highlands and Islands Jillian Walker said: “This is a fantastic amount – a huge ‘thank you’ to all those who gave up their time to help collect on the day.
“Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and there was a real fun atmosphere with a brilliant result.”
The new Shetland fundraising group will be holding their first meeting at the end of April and anyone interested in attending is asked to email jillian.walker@mariecurie.org.uk or phone 01463 238328.
Marie Curie provides care and support for those living with terminal illnesses, and their families.
However, the charity says that greater awareness is needed as “one in four people in the UK currently don’t receive the support they need and deserve at the end of their life”.
