News / The first of many… Magellan arrives in port
FORTY six thousand tonne cruise ship Magellan, with a passenger capacity of 1,250, was the first visitor of the 2018 season in Lerwick Harbour on Tuesday.
Arriving early on Tuesday morning from Reykjavik, the 221-metre long Bahamian-flagged vessel heralds the start of a season expected to bring some 91 cruise ships to Shetland between now and October – an 81 per cent increase on last year’s figures.
Meanwhile one passenger of the Magellan had to be airlifted to hospital in Lerwick during the night while the vessel was west of Fair Isle.
The coastguard helicopter was tasked just before 11pm on Monday and took the passenger to the Clickmin landing site to a waiting ambulance.
