News / Scalloway Hotel wins awards
THE ACCLAIMED Scalloway Hotel has won a number of prizes in the regional islands round of the 2018 Scottish Hotel Awards.
It was recognised in the bar dining hotel and the informal fine dining hotel categories.
Staff member Adel Smith was also honoured in the food and beverage individual section, while Sean Abernethy was recognised in the hotel sous chef of the year category.
Owner Caroline Mackenzie said she was delighted that her new kitchen team has been recognised in this fashion.
“We faced some difficulties in recruitment last year particularly in the kitchen trying to attract chefs to come and work in Shetland”, she said.
“At the end of the summer we recruited a new head chef, George Fraser, and Sean Abernethy as our new sous chef.
“We are delighted that they both have joined the company, they both have come to us with a wealth of experience in excellent establishments. They really raised the bar in terms of the food we are providing.
“It is also really great that our bar food has been recognised. It is the same kitchen that is providing both, bar dining and fine dining.”
The regional winners will go forward as finalists in the national awards, which will take place in Edinburgh, in April.
The hotel, which is run by Caroline and Peter Mackenzie, won the informal hotel restaurant prize at last year’s national awards, while it was also named Scottish independent hoteliers of the year at the 2016 event.
