News / A rarity: police caught no drink drivers over festive
POLICE in Shetland have praised road users in the islands after around 50 drivers were breathalysed over the festive period – and no-one was found to be over the limit.
Shetland area commander Lindsay Tulloch said it was the first time under his watch that no drink drivers had been caught over Christmas and New Year.
He said: “We’ve participated in the national campaign over the Christmas and New Year period. We’ve breathalysed in the region of 50 drivers – none of which have been over the limit, which is really positive for me, and I hope that drivers and road users are actually taking heed of the messages we’ve been putting out in relation to the dangers of drinking and driving.”
Tulloch told BBC Radio Shetland: “As area commander here in Shetland, it’s the first time that I’ve seen nobody charged for drink driving offences over the festive period, but we certainly will not be complacent in relation to that.
“We’re still in the winter months where road conditions can be quite treacherous, we’re moving into the Up Helly Aa festival period, so we’ll be out and about and we’ll still be stopping drivers and ensuring that people stick to the laws.”
