AS PUPILS return to schools across Shetland on Wednesday this week, Shetland Islands Council is asking drivers to take extra care.
Around 3,600 pupils will start the new school term on Wednesday and drivers are asked to watch out for young children near schools, many of whom may be unfamiliar with the road layout and school entrances.
Shetland road safety advisory panel chairman and SIC councillor Steven Coutts urged drivers to keep their speed down.
“After six weeks of summer holidays, drivers may have become accustomed to relatively quiet roads around our schools,” he said.
“We’d like to remind drivers to take care as they approach the 20mph zones, which will be active again around schools at the start and end of each school day.
“There will obviously be children and parents making their way to and from school, and some will be unfamiliar with the road crossings and dropping off points.”
