Letters / A period of quiet
I think everyone who has an opinion on what Alistair Carmichael should do next has now expressed it, so perhaps we could have a period of quiet while we see what happens with the Parliamentary inquiry and the legal petition?
He has made a full confession and shown remorse but it appears some people want daily public humiliation as well.
I have always admired Mr Carmichael’s work as a constituency MP and this week I have seen it again. Despite the intense personal and political pressure, and despite our political differences, when I asked him to help an American student who had fallen foul of the UK Border Force while on his way for a summer vacation in Shetland, he immediately took up the case and has since spent many hours trying to get the appropriately-initialled BF to see reason – rather than attempted illegal immigration.
Whatever the outcome of the inquiries, I hope Mr Carmichael will seek a renewed mandate. I suspect he would win it on the basis of his constituency work, if not on the national political issues.
Yours sincerely,
Jonathan Wills
