Letters / Once bitten, twice shy
Alistair Carmichael is keen to point out that his Con-Dem government saved Shetland’s coastguard tug.
He is less keen to remind us that his Con-Dem government refused to fund rescue missions on the Mediterranean Sea for the poor and needy fleeing conflict in Syria and Gaza – conflicts arguably exacerbated by UK foreign and economic policy.
I voted for Mr Carmichael at the last Westminster election, partly because I felt there was no electable alternative, but also for his stance on human rights issues.
Unfortunately he has been part of a government that is happy to let refugees drown as a deterrent to others, a government that allows the working class to shoulder the economic burden of austerity while the super-rich become super-rich-max. I will not be making the same mistake twice – once bitten, twice shy.
