News / Bad timing

AN APPRENTICE joiner who was too young to drive when he took his mother’s car or a spin while almost twice the legal alcohol limit faces a huge insurance bill when he finally gets to drive legally.

On Thursday Lerwick Sheriff Court heard that 16 year old John Knox had been drinking at a party at his house, at 78 North Lochside, Lerwick, when his parents were away.

He decided to drive his mother’s car around the block, only to be stopped by police officers who happened to be driving around the same block as him on 10 August.

Sheriff Philip Mann banned Knox from driving for 12 months and fined him £400 after he admitted drink driving, as well as driving without a licence or insurance.

The sheriff said Knox had been “really, really stupid”, and would have to pay a huge insurance premium once he was old enough to drive had had served his ban.
