Crackdown on parking

POLICE in Shetland are stepping up their fight against dangerous parking around Lerwick.

Shetland area commander Lindsay Tulloch said appeals to parents to refrain from “dangerous and inconsiderate parking” while picking up their children from the town’s schools had not been listened to.

The acting chief inspector added that officers were also receiving an increasing number of complaints about illegal parking in the town centre.

Tulloch warned that anyone found parking dangerously would be fined £100 and receive three penalty points.

Parking in a restricted area, such us on double yellow lines, would incur a £30 on the spot fixed penalty, he said.

“Schools have also sent out letters to parents asking them to refrain from parking illegally and inconsiderately. Despite the efforts we have made to appeal to people it is still continuing,” he said.

“And due to the fact that we are getting increased complaints in regards to the parking in and around Lerwick town centre, anybody who is found parked illegally in restricted areas will now receive an on the spot fixed penalty.”

He added that his officers would also continue with their efforts to enforce the 20mph speed limits outside schools.
