Weather / Wintry conditions continue to affect island life

THERE was some new snow overnight in places with an amber Met Office weather warning in place until 10am this morning (Monday).

With temperatures near or below freezing driving conditions remain tricky and hazardous in places.

All schools, UHI Shetland, the Eric Gray Centre and other council facilities will remain closed today.

All early morning bus services are currently suspended butt the town service will resume at 12 noon.

All morning flights in or out of Shetland are either cancelled or delayed.

Some internal ferries are disrupted too, with the Bluemull Sound service suspended early this morning as some crew were unable to make it to the ferry due to the snow.

A number of local businesses are also affected, with some deciding not to open today.

NHS Shetland said last night that some procedures and appointment at the Gilbert Bain and across health centres have been cancelled for today.

“We are aiming to maintain services at health centres, but these may be telephone based, rather than face to face,” a health board spokesperson said.

“We recognise the difficulties patients will experience with travel and if you are unable to attend an appointment, please call your health centre to reschedule.

“For hospital services, we are unfortunately needing to postpone some appointments, including planned theatre procedures.

“If you are affected you will be contacted directly. If you haven’t heard from our staff your appointment will more than likely be going ahead, however if you feel you cannot attend safely, please get in touch – in normal working hours – and we will be glad to rearrange this for you.”
