AROUND £11,400 has been raised by the Unst and Yell tunnel action groups through their recent online auction.

The money will go towards planned seismic surveys of Yell Sound and Bluemull Sound.

Joint chair of Yell Tunnel Action Group Graham Hughson said: “We are extremely grateful to all those that have participated in the auction – both in terms of gifting items and taking part in the bidding.

“The funds, together with that which has already been raised in the community, will go towards the essential seismic work required to inform the next stage of tunnel development.”

POLICE Scotland says the recent conviction of a man for historic sexual offences against teenage girls in Shetland shows that “time is no barrier to justice”.

It comes after Anthony McElhone, 71, was found guilty of indecent assault and rape between March 1993 and December 1996 at various locations in Shetland.

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison at the High Court in Edinburgh on Friday, and was also placed on the sex offenders’ register.

Detective constable Nina Crehan said: “McElhone subjected these girls to sustained sexual abuse over a number of years.

“I would like to thank them for their assistance with our investigations. My thoughts are with them, and I hope this result brings them some sense of closure.

“Sexual abuse will not be tolerated, and this case shows that time is no barrier to justice. I’d urge anyone who has experienced or is experiencing abuse to report it to us and we will investigate thoroughly.”

Director of the Scottish Gallery Christina Jansen said: “The Northern Isles brings together artists whose lives and practices have been influenced by, or are rooted in, the unique archipelagos of Orkney and Shetland.

“Their work reflects the reality of living in these island communities: the wide horizons, the raw, elemental weather and the close relationship between people and place.”

The exhibition will run from 8 January to 28 February.
