AN AUCTION has been launched today (Wednesday) to raise funds to support seismic surveys on the Bluemull and Yell Sound routes.
The Unst and Yell Tunnel Action Groups launched the auction at 5pm today to support their works to make tunnels to Unst and Yell a reality.
Alice Mathewson, joint chair of Unst Tunnel Action Group, said there was something for everyone in the auction – from self-catering hideaways to local produce and “one-of-a-kind experiences”.
“We ran a very successful auction two years ago which generated over £10,000 to support the geo-technical investigations and the socio-economic and environmental impact work for the tunnels,” she said.
“With even more items this time round, we aim to smash that total! We are extremely grateful to all those that have donated so generously to the auction.”
The auction will run until 9pm on Friday 12 December. To find out more, visit http://shetlandtunnels.co.uk
SHETLAND Women’s Aid will host a candlelit vigil in Lerwick next week as part of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.
The quiet, reflective gathering will remember the women whose lives have been taken by gender-based violence, and to stand in solidarity with those who have lived through abuse.
The gathering will be held at Lerwick Flower Park on Tuesday 9 December between 7-8pm.
As part of the evening, a collective “cairn of hope” will be available for anyone who wishes to add a stone or message. This is entirely optional and offered as a gentle symbol of solidarity.
Candles will be provided, and hot drinks and soup will be available in the pavilion. Everyone is welcome to attend and take part.
Shetland Women’s Aid added it could be contacted on 01595 692070 or office@shetlandwa.org if you, or someone you know, needs support. In an emergency, call 999.

LERWICK Community Council is set to co-opt four new members after a number of vacancies were left following a recent election.
The community council had been left with six empty seats after October’s election, but Monday’s meeting heard that four people had since come forward to fill the vacancies.
Chairman Jim Anderson – who was appointed to the seat at the start of the meeting – said the four people could be co-opted onto the council without the need for a vote.
The alternative was for the council to hold a by-election for the seats.
But Anderson said the council had warned it would be no earlier than June 2026 before that could be held.
Community councillor Brian Harris said they were “not guaranteed to get anyone” if they went to election next year, and that these people might drop out.
Anderson agreed, saying it would be “better having someone physically in the seat”.
Fellow member Amanda Hawick asked if the four people could be named before they made a decision, but Anderson said they had not consented to being named publicly.
NHS SHETLAND has recruited a new audiologist, who will take up the role in the New Year.
Interim diagnostics lead Lucy Wilson said they were delighted to make the appointment after a recent round of interviews.
“The new audiologist will join us in the New Year, bringing additional stability to our audiology provision and helping us continue to strengthen the service,” she said.
“We know how important timely access to hearing care is, and we are committed toimproving waiting times as quickly as possible.”
While the recruitment process was ongoing, audiology services continued to be delivered through regular visiting clinics and with valuable support from the RNID.
NHS Shetland said demand for on-island appointments has remained high, and patients have been prioritised according to clinical need, particularly children and those referred by ENT specialists.
