Council / Leask joined by Da Flea as Movember moustache challenge nears end

A LOCAL councillor is letting his facial hair flow to raise money and awareness for men’s health through the Movember challenge.

Anyone who has seen Lerwick North and Bressay member Stephen Leask in recent weeks will have no doubt noticed his rather impressive looking moustache.

It is all for Movember, a charitable movement encouraging men to grow moustaches in the month of November to raise money for men’s health causes – such as prostate and testicular cancer, and mental health.

Leask was even joined in the moustache stakes by senior councillor Allison Duncan at Wednesday’s development committee meeting.

Da Flea’s effort was not quite so bushy, but impressive nonetheless.

And as Leask explained, Duncan has a backstory having been affected by prostate cancer in the past – something which he spoke publicly about to raise awareness.

“I asked him to join me to help raise awareness for men’s health, Leask said.

“He joined me at the development meeting which raised a laugh – a bit of levity in the chamber is no bad thing.”

Leask has raised more than £200 so far through donations – but said his wife Chris, who is not the biggest fan of moustaches, is offering the councillor £100 to shave it off.

“I have numerous friends who’ve been impacted by prostate cancer, so I thought, let’s raise some money for men’s health.

“I said if I raise £100 then I’d put in a hundred quid.”

People can donate to Leask’s online fundraiser here.
