Climate / Climate action participatory budgeting funding on offer
GROUPS, clubs and organisations in Shetland are being invited to make their case for funding for community-led climate action projects.
It is part of the ‘Climate Action Ting’ participatory budgeting project, which is led by the Highlands and Islands Climate Hub.
Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and the Coastal Communities Fund from Shetland Islands Council, Climate Action Ting will bring a participatory budgeting event to Shetland in March 2026.
Grants of up to £7,500 are available from the Climate Action Ting project, which will see the public vote for projects they want to see receiving funding.
So that communities can learn more about the project and how to get involved, organisers Highlands and Islands Climate Hub are hosting an event on 29 November at the Islesburgh Community Centre from 10.30am to 1pm.
The event will provide details of the project and how community organisations with project ideas relating to climate action could be funded.
The Highlands and Islands Climate Hub development officer for Shetland Andrea Sánchez Quiroz will be one of four speakers which will present at the event.
She will be joined by Frances Browne, Magnie Holbourn (Foula Electricity Trust) and Brydon Sinclair (Nesting Community Development Company).
Sánchez Quiroz said: “I’m so pleased to be working on the Climate Action Ting project.
“I’ll be able to support groups to design and develop new and existing projects so that they can participate in the finale event in March 2026.
“I can’t wait to hear all the different ideas to take community led climate action, it’s going to be such an inspirational day.”
Applications will open in January and communities will submit their project idea to the Highlands and Islands Climate Hub.
They will then work to prepare a presentation for the public audience on the 14 March 2026 to win votes.
The successful organisations will be issued grants until the £40,000 funding pot runs out.
