Community / Hostel refurbishment and Sellafirth hub among projects awarded funding

THE SCOTTISH Government has announced significant funding for a number of projects in Shetland as part of a suite of island-related grants.

Shetland Islands Council’s refurbishment of the Janet Courtney Hostel in Lerwick into affordable housing as part of the Knab redevelopment project has secured £350,000 under the government’s islands programme.

The hostel is one of the few listed buildings left on the former Anderson High School as the site gets prepare for redevelopment.

The Sellafirth Community Hub project in Yell, which is led by North Yell Development Council, has also been awarded nearly £300,000 through the via Carbon Neutral Islands Fund.

Funding worth £80,000 is also going towards a Scalloway waterfront regeneration project.

Deputy first minister Kate Forbes said: “Our island communities are bursting with ambition, innovation and potential, and the Scottish Government is committed to supporting local priorities and long-term sustainability.

“Indeed it the underpinning objective of the Convention of the Highlands and Islands to take a collective, strategic approach to unlocking economic opportunities and tackling issues.”

It comes as the autumn meeting of the Convention of the Highlands and Islands takes place at Brodick Town Hall in Arran today (Monday).

The government said islands funding for projects in Argyll and Bute, Highland, Na h-Eileanan Siar, North Ayrshire, Orkney, and Shetland amounts to £5.9 million in total for 2025/26.
