MORE THAN 80 runners wrapped up and braved the cold, windy weather to tackle the Spiggie 10k race on Sunday morning.

Not only did runners have to deal with the remnants of Storm Benjamin, but they had to do so while scaling the unforgiving South Mainland climbs.

It was Katie Clubb who managed the elements best to win the overall race on Sunday, racing around in a time of 38 minutes and 18 seconds.

In a close finish, Aaron Ferguson was second – just four seconds behind Clubb – to finish as first man.

James Anderson and Grant Ferguson were second and third in the men’s race, while Emma Leask and Mary Rutherford completed the podium in the women’s field.


RAMSAY Hogg was the winner of the first darts grand prix of the season, coming out on top of a 70-player field on Saturday to win the Hughson Brothers shield.

The early rounds at the Whitedale Social Club were played over the best of five legs and featured some close games, before the competition headed into the quarter-finals.

These were played over the best of seven legs and saw Hogg beat Calum Williamson 4-3, Ajax’s John Wishart see off Philip Mowat, Liam Sutherland beat Scott Johnson 4-0 and Ryan Inkster also progress to the last four.

It was the best of nine legs in the semi-finals, with Hogg defeating Wishart 5-0 and Sutherland beating Inkster 5-1 to set up the final.

The final was the best of 11 legs, and Hogg emerged as a 6-4 winner over Sutherland to claim the trophy.

High checkouts were recorded by Hogg (116, 115, 111), Sutherland (100, 104, 108, 115 and 120), Craig Smith (111), Kyle Tait (116) and Adrian Morrison (110) across the day’s play.

There were also 26 180’s recorded, with Hogg hitting four, Sutherland and Inkster three each, and others being hit by Frank Watt, Evan Goudie, Callum Urquhart, Richard Hughson, Wishart and Evan Grogan (all two).

Shetland Darts Association thanked Hughson Brothers for their continued sponsorship, Carl Cross for presenting the trophies and Whitedale Social Club and its bar staff for hosting the event.


SHETLAND Valkyries returned to winning ways with a dominant win over Inverness Craig Dunain women on Saturday.

The team welcomed Inverness to Gilbertson Park at the weekend, thumping them in an 82-0 victory.

It means the Valkyries have now recorded three wins and three defeats from their opening six fixtures this campaign.

They return to action again on Saturday, welcoming Lochaber to Gilbertson Park for a second successive home fixture.


SPENCER Moreland helped Brechin City into the third round of football’s Scottish Cup at the weekend.

Moreland was a starter as Brechin overcame Dundonald Bluebell 3-1 on Saturday, sending them into the hat for the next round.

They will travel to face Scottish League One side Kelty Hearts in round three, with that tie due to be played on the weekend of Saturday 29 November.
