Also in the news / Also in the news: BT letter ‘genuine’, Flight exhibition and more …

Passage by Paul Bloomer.

BT HAS assured residents that a reportedly scam letter offering people the chance to switch broadband to the company is genuine.

The letter, shared widely on social media on Monday evening, asked people if they had “recently experienced a disruption” in their broadband.

It offered the chance to switch to BT fibre broadband for £26.99 a month, and the company even offered to contact residents’ current providers to organise the switch.

But concerns were raised about whether or not it was a scam after one of the numbers on the letter did not seem to work, redirecting people to a different number.

Responding to Shetland News, BT reassured people in Shetland that the letter “is genuine and not fraudulent”.

“There was a temporary technical issue with the contact number included in the letter, but this has now been resolved,” a company spokesperson said.

“We apologise for any confusion this letter may have caused”.

Senior Crown Estate staff are set to sit down with representatives from Shetland Islands Council, Lerwick Port Authority and the Shetland Fisherman’s Association. They will also meet key aquaculture tenants.

Since its creation in 2017, more than £9m has been returned to Shetland Islands Council by Crown Estate Scotland.

Its marine director Mike Spain said this week’s meetings would give them a chance to hear first-hand about how they can better support marine activities across Shetland.
