THOSE who have been without broadband internet since the start of the month following subsea cable damage could see their service restored next Saturday (25 October).

The owner of the damaged SHEFA-2 cable confirmed to Shetland News that the repair vessel Cable Vigilance is scheduled to leave Calais on Monday (20 October).

It will head to the section of damaged cable off Orkney.

Faroese Telecom managing director Páll Højgaard Vesturbú said: “Preparatory work in Orkney, involving local boats and contractors, will begin on Tuesday.

“Cable recovery and jointing operations are expected to begin around Thursday, 23 October.

“The new shore-end section is planned to be landed on Saturday, 25 October, with full restoration anticipated later the same day, weather permitting.”

It comes after a survey was undertaken at the site earlier this week.

The fault on the cable in shallow waters off Orkney occurred on Friday 3 October.

It saw broadband provision in Shetland for customers on some providers such as Vodafone, Sky and TalkTalk drop completely.

It echoed similar disruption in July and August following damage to a different section to Faroese Telecom’s SHEFA-2 cable, which was caused by a fishing boat.
