Council / Council to host ASN transition events
SHETLAND Islands Council will hold a series of engagement events about how it can help meet the needs of young people with additional support needs after they leave school.
A series of public meetings are planned for next week, as well as an online meeting, asking parents, family members, carers and young people for their views.
The council said it is seeking views in order to develop a policy about helping those with extra needs to transition to life after school.
Young people who are still at school will also be invited to take part in focus groups at school, as well as being welcome to attend these sessions.
Meetings will take place from 6pm-7.30pm at the following locations and dates:
- Monday 29 September – Bixter Hall
- Tuesday 30 September – Carnegie Hall, Sandwick
- Wednesday 1 October – Islesburgh Community Centre, Room 10
- Thursday 2 October – Brae Hall
An online meeting via Microsoft Teams will also be held on Friday 3 October between 6pm-7pm, with anyone unable to attend a public meeting asked to email centralinclusionteam@shetland.gov.uk for the link.
Children’s services director Samantha Flaws saidevery young person’s journey after leaving school would look different, depending on their aspirations and goals.
“We want to make sure that different services work well together to give a positive impact on those young people who need additional support,” she said.
“We’re keen to hear from young people and the people involved in their lives on how best to do this, and I’d urge people to share their views with us.”
