THE OUTSIDE pool at the Clickimin Leisure Complex in Lerwick is to stay closed for the time being.

Shetland Recreational Trust chief executive Robert Geddes said the pool was initially closed amid staffing challenges, with the decision made to keep it closed to save on energy.

It is fair to say the outdoor lagoon – which comes with a waterfall feature – was a bit of a novelty for Shetland when opened many years ago, offering folk a chance to enjoy the contrast of the warm water and cool air.

But swimmers will have noticed the outdoor pool has not been accessible for many months.

Explaining the situation, Geddes said: “The outside pool will remain closed for the time being.

“It requires a lifeguard to comply with legislation around the operation of pools safely, and we were going through a period where we didn’t have enough staff to sustain its opening.

“The pool was closed more than it was open, so a decision was taken to save on energy and cost associated to operating the pool whilst taking some pressure off the staff to continue its operation.”

He said a final decision has not yet been made on future operation, “but it will remain closed in the short to medium term”.
