THE NOTICE of election for community councils has been published today (Friday).

Anyone interested in representing their local community is being invited to submit their nomination within the next five weeks, to join one of the 18 community councils across Shetland.

Anyone who wishes to stand as a community councillor must be aged 16 or over, and be on the electoral register for the area they wish to represent.

They should also be able to commit to attending community council meetings every four to six weeks.

Nomination papers are now available on the council website and must be completed and returned by 4pm on Thursday 16 October 2025.

A notice of uncontested elections will then be posted the following day.

If there will be a contested election then ballot papers will be issued on Friday 31 October, with the closing date for the return of papers on Thursday 20 November.

Association of Shetland Community Councils chairman Ian Walterson said people do not need to have any previous experience or qualifications to stand – “just a keen interest in community life and a desire to make your area better”.

INDIE folk artist Rachel Sermanni is coming to Mareel later this month.

The Scottish-based singer/songwriter will play the venue on Sunday 21 September, having previously played in Shetland a number of times before.

This time she is on the road solo, touring her latest album Dreamer Awake.

Shetland Arts described her latest release as an “in-depth assortment of playful and candid vignettes, peeping into life”, with Sermanni seeking to be honest with herself and her environment.

Since the release of the album, she has become a mother for the second time, and continues to explore this experience while offering her songs and her insights into creativity.

THE FULLY-rigged sailing ship Sørlandet, which doubles up as an international training vessel, is currently visiting Shetland.

A+ World Academy is described as a one-of-a-kind high school at sea, with 72 students aged 16 to 19 from 12 different countries completing a full year of high school onboard.

Twenty staff on board oversee the school year aboard the Sørlandet.

A quirk of this school year is that new students are using Yondr pouches on board to create a completely phone-free environment at sea.

Phones are locked away during the voyage, allowing students to truly live in the moment and focus on their studies.

The Sørlandet is due to sail from Shetland on Sunday.

CLAN Cancer Support has launched its silent auction ahead of its Hollywood-themed ball later this month.

More than 50 items are available including a signed Denis Law print, an overnight stay with breakfast and afternoon tea at Pittodrie House Hotel and a bottle of Macallan Concept Whiskey.

Bidders have until 11pm on Saturday 27 September 27 to place an offer, with all proceeds going towards providing vital services for people affected by cancer in the north-east, Moray, Shetland and Orkney.

The silent auction can be viewed here.
