Council / Plans for more traffic calming measures in Lerwick move forward
NOTICES highlighting Shetland Islands Council’s (SIC) intention to install more traffic calming measures in Lerwick have been published.
These include new road humps and speed cushions, while some extra 20mph zones including along King Harald Street are proposed.
Shetland News first reported on the move for more traffic calming measures back in April.
It comes after 20mph limits were put in place on more residential areas of Lerwick, as well as Scalloway.
The new proposals include a 20mph zone on Scalloway Road/South Road from the south end of King Harald Street to just after Lerwick Health Centre.
There is also a 20mph limit proposed for the main stretch of King Harald Street, including the lead-up to the junction on the north side.
There would also be a total of two flat topped road humps along the length of King Harald Street with a raised table junction area provided at the junction with King Erik Street, near to the playpark.
Also proposed are two flat topped road humps on South Road between Burgh Road and Cairnfield Road, and a pair of speed cushions on Scalloway Road between Burgh Road and King Harald Street.
For Burgh Road two flat topped road humps, and one pair of speed cushions, are planned for the length of the road.
There are also a number of measures planned for Gilbertson Road, which features Bell’s Brae Primary School at its south end.
There would be a total of three flat topped road humps, and two pairs of speed cushions, installed on the road with a further raised table junction area provided on Bell’s Road.
Speeds on Gilbertson Road have previously been the subject of a petition from residents.
Shetland Islands Council said the traffic calming measures are “necessary to help maintain suitable vehicle speeds” while in some cases they would “provide safe and convenient crossing points for pedestrians”.
People with concerns about the various proposals are invited to submit their objections to the council.
