Energy / Protesters call for stop to Rosebank development
AROUND 20 activists gathered outside the parliamentary office in Lerwick’s Commercial Street on Saturday to protest against the controversial Rosebank development.
The local protest was part a coordinated day of action across the UK calling on prime minister Keir Starmer to reject Rosebank, the UK’s largest untapped oil field.
The proposed development to the northwest of Shetland received a licence under the Tory government but following a successful legal challenge, developer Equinor will have to submit additional assessments on the environmental impacts of burning the oil and gas.
Campaigners argue that the huge Rosebank field will not contribute to the UK’s energy security and will not contribute towards lowering high energy cost. Instead, the UK Treasury will support the development with generous tax breaks, they said.
They also highlighted the links of Rosebank minority owner Ithaca Energy as majority-owner of the Delek Group, which operates in occupied Palestinian territory and provides fuel to the Israeli army.
