Water having to be shipped into Skerries with levels low
TANKERS of water are having to be shipped into Skerries up to five times a week due to low levels in the island.
Prolonged periods with minimal rainfall have left the reservoir and storage tank levels low in Skerries, Scottish Water said.
That has meant the company is having to ship a road tanker full of treated water into the island up to five times a week from Whalsay to maintain people’s water supplies.
Scottish Water said this would “continue for the foreseeable future”.
The company added this would allow it to meet the demands of the people in Skerries, and to also allow the reservoir and storage levels to recover.
“We will continue to monitor the situation and support the community,” it said.
“At this time, there are no other water supplies in Shetland on our risk register.”
