MAREEL has seen an upturn in cinema sales this year as films like Minecraft drew people to the flicks.

The Lerwick venue has reflected a national trend of better box office takings, buoyed by popular blockbusters.

While UK and Irish cinemas reported a 18 per cent increase between January and June compared to the year before, Mareel has enjoyed a 30 per cent rise in comparison to 2024.

Sales and marketing manager Tessa Huntley said the biggest film so far this year for Mareel – “by a mile” – has been Minecraft.

The film, which featured Jason Momoa and Jack Black, was inspired by the children’s computer game of the same name.

Other popular movies have included Lilo & Stitch and Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.

“It’s great news for cinema and plenty more highly anticipated titles coming up for the second half of the year with Frankenstein, Wicked: For Good, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, Avatar: Fire and Ash and Zootopia 2,” Huntley added.

Across the country the box office takings for January to June were the best since the Covid pandemic.
