WITH the March film schedule under way now, Shetland Arts’ cinema programmer Jenny Leask shares her thoughts on what’s coming up this month.

Jenny has been working with Shetland Arts as cinema programmer for six years, having previously worked at cinemas in Edinburgh and for the Edinburgh International Film Festival since the mid 1990s. She enjoys the challenge of putting together the cinema programme every month, making sure to include a wide variety of blockbusters, family films and smaller, independent films, trying to ensure everyone can find something for them.

“We have an action-packed month sci-fi and superhero films, including the highly anticipated return of Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly as partners Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne in Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Together, with Hope’s parents Hank and Janet, and Scott’s daughter Cassie, the family finds themselves exploring the Quantum Realm… Shazam! Fury of the Gods is the sequel to the 2019 global hit and sees Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids still learning how to juggle teenage life with having adult superhero alter-egos. Adam Driver stars in 65 as an astronaut who, after a catastrophic crash on an unknown planet, quickly discovers he’s actually stranded on Earth… 65 million years ago.

As always, we have a good selection of family-friendly films in our programme. Marcel the Shell With Shoes On is an enchanting, whimsical and beautifully animated tale of an unlikely hero – an adorable one-inch-tall shell – who goes on an endeavour to track down his long-lost family. We also have a new and entertaining animated adventure that travels from ancient Egypt to modern day London, Mummies, as well as two classic children’s animations, Monsters Vs Aliens and Megamind.

Creed III is the third instalment of the popular franchise with Michael B. Jordan reprising the lead role. After dominating the boxing world, Adonis Creed has been thriving in both his career and family life. When a childhood friend and former boxing prodigy, Damian, resurfaces after serving a long sentence in prison, he is eager to prove that he deserves his shot in the ring… and Adonis must put his future on the line to battle Damian – a fighter who has nothing to lose.

Special screenings this month include our newest season of films – 30 years since the beloved actor and humanitarian died, we are celebrating the work of the iconic and hugely talented Audrey Hepburn. We’re screening five of her most iconic films starting with Sabrina, which screened last week, followed by Funny Face, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Charade and My Fair Lady.

Hamlet – Bristol Old Vic Live is a thrilling, visionary production of one of Shakespeare’s masterpieces, filmed live at Bristol Old Vic and starring Billy Howle, Mirren Mack and Niamh Cusack – the screening also includes an exclusive stage talk between the director and bestselling Shakespeare expert Professor Emma Smith.”
