Arts / Young dance band heads to Denmark for festival performances
IT IS not too often a Shetland band gets the chance to play abroad – let alone before any of their members even reach the age of 20.
But young dance band Filskit are set to do just that as they head off this week to Denmark.
The traditional group – featuring Kerem Tekcan (18) on accordion, Jayden Moore (16) on fiddle, guitarist Liam Slater (19) and drummer Euan Slater (17) – will be performing at the Rundt om Harmonikaen festival in Ansanger.
They will be hitting the stage multiple times across Thursday, Friday and Saturday (24, 25 and 26 July).
Eight times, according to Liam Slater – which will be sure to keep the quartet busy.
It all stems from a performance at the Shetland Accordion and Fiddle Festival last year that caught the eye of visiting Danish musician Kristian Rusbjerg.
“He’s one of the organisers of the festival, and got in touch after it to see if we’d be interested in coming across,” Slater said.
“It was an opportunity that was too good to pass up”.
Filskit – who were on the boat last night before flying from Aberdeen to Esbjerg – have become one of the key players in the next generation of dance bands in Shetland, regularly playing at events as well as Lerwick pubs.
They started in 2023 with a slot at the Shetland Accordion and Fiddle festival – and it has been a “quick and busy” couple of years since, Slater said.
