Sport / SIC convener ‘immensely proud’ of Island Games team
COUNCIL convener Andrea Manson has lavished congratulations on Shetland’s Island Games team after they returned home from a successful week in Orkney.
She also said “If I had an open top bus I’d have driven them along Commercial Street so that everybody could applaud them”.
Team Shetland won a total of 17 medals at the 2025 Island Games – one gold, nine silvers and seven bronzes.
There were medals in athletics, cycling, lawn bowls, archery and the triathlon.
Reflecting on Team Shetland’s trip to Kirkwall, Shetland Islands Council convener Andrea Manson said she was “immensely proud of them all”.
She added that they were “Shetland’s sporting ambassadors”.
“Wherever they go they’re always ambassadors for Shetland,” the councillor said.
“They’re such a good team, they’re such a likeable team and they just make friends wherever they go.”
Manson added that the friendliness of Shetlanders is “always something spoken about”.
The Shetland squad featured 175 members across 12 different sports.
And with Orkney not far away there was a strong number of Shetland supporters present to cheer on from the sidelines too.
