History / Hand-built Shetland Bus model donated to Scalloway Museum
A HAND-built model of a Shetland Bus boat has been donated to the Scalloway Museum after its Norwegian creator took it with him on a sailing trip to Shetland.
The model of Andholmen was given to the museum on Tuesday by Tron Hviding from Stavanger, who builds model ships as a hobby.
Having already planned a sailing trip to Shetland, he decided to take it with him to donate to the museum.
“I built Andholmen four years ago and after studying pictures from the Scalloway museum I could not find a model of Andholmen,” Hviding told Shetland News.
“I then contacted the museum and asked if they were interested in my model that I wanted to donate to them.
“We had planned a sailing trip to Shetland in advance and found it perfect to combine with the presentation of the model.”
During the summer the museum is open Monday to Friday 11am to 4pm, and Sunday 2pm to 4pm.
Andholmen was one of many fishing boats used by the Norwegian navy during the second world war, and undertook trips in the Shetland Bus operation.
She also features on top of the Shetland Bus memorial in Scalloway.
Under the cover of darkness, small boats – collectively known as the Shetland Bus – ferried people and weapons between Shetland and Norway, with Scalloway ending up being used as the operational base after initially starting at Catfirth before moving to Lunna.
Andholmen was one of the ‘liberation convoy’ of boats which made the trip from Norway to Shetland in May.
As seen in the link below, she also made a special visit to Scalloway during her trip – flanked by a flotilla of local boats.
