Sport / Sporting round-up: Madrid Cup, rugby sevens and more …

NESS United wrestled the Jewson Madrid Cup from Celtic on Saturday to become the third different cup winner of the outdoor season.

A double from Joe Casey helped the South Mainland side to lift the cup for a second time in three years, with Kennedy Moar responding for the Celts.

The cup final had to be moved to Clickimin 1 on Saturday morning after Seafield was deemed too waterlogged for the fixture to take place.

In the Ocean Kinetics Premier League, Whitedale overcame Spurs in an eight-goal thriller to throw the title race wide open on Friday night.

Ewan Inkster, Greg Tulloch, Jos Hatrick and brothers Bobby and Gary Scott scored to give Whitedale the three points at Strom, with Sam Maver (two) and Andrew Flett responding for Spurs.

The result leaves Celtic a point clear at the top at the halfway stage of the season, with the top two meeting in a mouth-watering clash tonight (Monday) at Gilbertson Park at 6.30pm.

In tonight’s other games, Whalsay host Whitedale at Harbison Park and Ness travel to Seafield to face Thistle.

A LAST-GASP penalty for Whalsay kept alive their Highland Amateur Cup dream on Friday and ended the hopes of Scalloway.

Neil Laurenson stepped up to fire the islanders through to the quarter-final in the final minute, sealing a 3-2 Whalsay win in Scalloway on Friday night.

That came with extra-time seeming likely, after goals from John Allan and Bobby Robertson for Scalloway and Euan and Lee Irvine for Whalsay had the two teams locked at 2-2.

Inver now lie in wait for Whalsay in the last eight, with the two sides to meet on 2 August.

Should they make it through that tie and to the semi-finals, Whalsay will meet either Carloway FC or Orkney’s Dounby Athletic on 16 August.

AFTER a morning of rain and strong wind, the sun came out for the outdoor bowls STS Trophy competition.

Twenty players were drawn into pairs and played two eight-end sets against different opponents.

The winning pair would be the one with the highest total shot score after the total 16 ends.

At the halfway point there were several pairs on nine shots, but out in front were Alex Elphinstone and Andy Walterson on 12.

This pair maintained their lead in the second half, finishing on 26 shots, to win the trophy.

The runners-up were Bill Christey and Mike Bailey on 24 and third were Donald Campbell and Willie Coutts on 21.

The trophy and other prizes were presented by Stuart Terris, the sponsor of the tournament, to the winners and runners-up.

Lerwick Indoor Bowling Club gave many thanks to Terris who, apart from the awards, also provided a buffet for the players and spectators and expertly managed the event.

TWO junior Whitedale football teams have celebrated recent trophy success.

Whitedale under-14s, sponsored by George Robertson Ltd, became the Hasting League Cup champions last week.

The club’s under-16s team, sponsored by NCG Builders, have also lifted the Cluness League Cup.

SHETLAND’S rugby players have celebrated one of their biggest weekends of the year, with its annual rugby sevens tournament.

With work continuing on a new 3G pitch at Clickimin, the competition moved to Gilbertson Park instead.

The junior sevens competition took place on Friday, with the seniors tournament on Saturday from 10am until 3.40pm.

As usual popular aspects of the sevens schedule returned, like the beer tent, BBQ and afterparty.
