LOCAL youth advocacy group Shetland Youth Voice is celebrating after winning a national award.

The group picked up the ‘Participation and Youth Voice’ prize at the National Youth Work Awards in Glasgow last night (Wednesday).

The event, hosted by YouthLink Scotland, saw youth work teams from across Scotland attend to celebrate the impact of youth work.

Shetland Youth Voice’s award win highlights the group’s work in making sure that young people across the isles have a role in local decision-making.

One recent activity was bringing national partners to a transport summit, influenced by Shetland Islands Council’s (SIC) corporate plan, and tackled a range of topics to help shape the future of their communities.

Other finalists in the same category were Future Change, a youth-led social action movement changing life from the inside out at HMPYOI Polmont, and Routes, a youth support and participation project for 12-to-26-year-olds affected by alcohol and drug use in their families.

The work of Shetland Youth Voice has been supported by the council’s youth and employability service.

The SIC’s education and families committee chairman Davie Sandison said: “This is brilliant news and I had really hoped they would do well.

“The revival of Shetland Youth Voice has been exemplary and they’ve been well supported too. My congratulations to everyone involved.”

Shetland Youth Voice aims to “engage young people in meaningful participation within their communities, fostering leadership, advocacy, and positive change”.

It features general members, executive members and a leadership team.
