THIS YEAR’s Shetland Pride gets under way this week with the opening of a meeting space in the Islesburgh Community Centre from tomorrow (Tuesday) as part of the build-up to the main event on Saturday.

Organisers said the Pride Hub, which will be open from 9am on Tuesday, offers a space to buy official merchandise, take part in arts and crafts, and connect with the local community.

Shetland Pride secretary Sarah Cooper said: “The Pride Hub is also a welcoming space where anyone can come and chat, whether they want to get involved or simply feel part of the community.

“We need spaces like this now more than ever places where people feel safe, supported, and celebrated.”

The hub will be open in Room 9 at the community centre from Tuesday to Thursday, running from 9am to 9pm each day. Arts and crafts sessions are on offer daily from 3pm to 5pm and again between 7pm to 9pm.

Cooper added: “We really enjoy running the arts and crafts sessions because it gives folk a chance to get creative, or political if they want to prepare something ahead of the parade.”

Saturday’s parade kicks off from Lerwick’s Market Cross at 11am and will head to the pride village at the Gilbertson Park, which will be open until 5pm.

This will be followed by a youth party at the Lerwick Legion and an over 18s event at the Sound Hall, both starting at 8pm. Tickets are available online here.

The Islesburgh hub will also be used as a training venue for volunteers in the evenings.

Organisers are still looking for volunteers to help during the event, especially parade marshals.  Anyone interested in volunteering can fill out a short online form here.
