Court / Sentencing adjourned after embezzler fails to appear in court

SENTENCING the former treasurer of a local charity for embezzlement has been postponed by another week after he failed to appear for a court hearing this morning (Wednesday).

Regan Peggs, of Walls, had pleaded guilty to embezzling almost £2,000 from the Walls swimming pool over a 16-month period between the end of 2022 and the end of March 2024 during a court hearing in May.

Sentence had been deferred until 4 June to allow him time to repay the monies.

The 45-year old was also due in court on Wednesday for a pre-trial hearing on two drink driving charges.

But when his cases called at Lerwick Sheriff Court this morning, Peggs was not present.

The court adjourned proceedings to allow defence solicitor Tommy Allan to contact his client, which was initially unsuccessful.

As Sheriff Ian Cruickshank decided whether to adjourn or to grant a warrant for apprehension, Peggs texted his solicitor to say he had been under the impression his cases would only call next week.

As there was no opposition from the Crown, the sheriff then adjourned sentencing until 11 June for Peggs’ personal appearance at court.

The trial date for the two drink driving charges, which Peggs both denies, is 3 July.
